KSTU hosted the final of the intensive course ‘Generation Z: Eco-engineering: Green City Laboratory’
On 10 April, the Generation Z: Eco-engineering: Green City Laboratory project and educational intensive course came to an end in the university’s Main Academic Building. The final stage of the intensive course was the public presentation of interdisciplinary student projects.
The Institute of Marine Technologies, Power Engineering and Construction organised the intensive course in conjunction with the Technosphere Safety and Environmental Engineering Department. Its aim was to create an interdisciplinary project platform where student teams develop comprehensive solutions for the engineering development of urban areas, with a focus on environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and closed-loop resource management. The team of organisers and mentors for the intensive course included Associate Professors N.R. Akhmedova, E.S. Zemlyakova, A.S. Lavrova, S.A. Tereshchenko and M.S. Kharitonov.
The participants in the intensive course were interdisciplinary teams comprising students from the training programmes Agronomy, Environmental Engineering and Water Management, Construction and Electroenergetics and Electrical Engineering. Over two months, the participants devised a green development project for a real-life site in the centre of Kaliningrad.
Work on the projects consisted of two stages. During the distance stage, students carried out a preliminary analysis of the site, formulated technical specifications and developed engineering and environmental concepts. In the course of the offline stage, they integrated and comprehensively refined the projects. Throughout the final project session, the teams consolidated the results of their work in their respective areas, developed a unified concept and prepared a final presentation to defend before the judging panel.
The judging panel comprised representatives of the KSTU administration and invited experts from relevant industry sectors.
After the project presentations, the judges announced the Beta team as the winner. The team consisted of Ekaterina Zinovieva (Agronomy), Anna Korneva (Environmental Engineering and Water Management), Alina Kulakova (Construction), Alexander Zemlyakov and Nikita Klyuchko (Electroenergetics and Electrical Engineering). The winning team’s project demonstrated a high level of detail and a realistic implementation plan.
The organisers noted the high standard of all the projects presented and emphasised that such initiatives are an important step towards shaping a new generation of engineers capable of addressing the pressing challenges of sustainable urban development.
The recent intensive course formed part of KSTU’s long-term strategy for the development of practice-oriented interdisciplinary education, as well as a contribution to the training of a talent pool for the scientific and technological development of the Kaliningrad Region.
