At the BaltikVet Training and Practical Centre, a surgical procedure was conducted as a component of the educational curriculum. This operation involved the excision of a skin neoplasm located on the posterior pelvic limb of a cat's thigh. A class with 1- and 2-year students from the Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Food Systems, specialisation Veterinary Medicine, was conducted under the guidance of the Candidate of Veterinary Sciences, associate professor of the department Evgenia Igorevna Shumanova, who during the operation assisted a veterinary surgeon, director of the centre BalticVet, Olga Nikitina.

- This is not just helping a sick animal but also testing a practice-oriented approach to teaching students, explained the Director of the Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Food Systems, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor Nina Anatolievna Frolova. - In the near future, we are planning to introduce such practices into the educational process on a permanent basis.

Cytological examination of a fine-needle biopsy of tissue from the cat revealed pathological changes of the cells as well as an intensive growth of the neoplasm itself. The surgery to remove the growth was successful, and now the cat is at home and recovering!
