Today we mark a day of military glory – the 81st anniversary of the capture of Königsberg
The capture of Königsberg, a strategically important fortress and the capital of East Prussia, as well as a key stronghold of the Wehrmacht’s defences in the east, was one of the most significant events in the final phase of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 and played a major role in the final defeat of Nazi Germany.
Soviet troops captured Königsberg, a fortress city, during the East Prussian Offensive. The assault began on 6 April 1945, and on 9 April the city’s garrison command issued an order to cease resistance.
The Soviet military took around 94,000 German soldiers prisoner and captured over 2,000 artillery pieces, 1,652 mortars, and 128 aircraft.
According to various sources, between 7,000 and 7,500 Soviet soldiers were killed during the assault on Königsberg.
Today at 10:00, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the memorial to 1,200 Guardsmen to mark the Day of the Assault on Königsberg. Representatives of the university’s administration, staff members, students and cadets of Kaliningrad State Technical University will participate in the commemorative event alongside members of the Kaliningrad community.
Eternal memory to the Heroes who died for the freedom and independence of our Motherland!
