Today, Russia honours the timeless symbol of a seafarer — the striped shirt
This wonderful undershirt has its own special day, and that’s hardly surprising – in our country, the telnyashka (striped shirt) is firmly associated with the army and the navy.
Today, striped shirts are worn by naval personnel, civilian seafarers and fishermen, marines, paratroopers and border guards, National Guard special forces and Ministry of Emergency Situations rescue workers. But it was navy sailors who first wore the telnyashka as part of their official uniform.
At present, our cadets from the BFFSA, KMFC and SPbMFC are undertaking their shipboard training on fishing vessels and the four-masted barque Kruzenshtern.
Wherever our people may be, whatever seas they may sail, their striped companion always stays with them – the ‘seafarer’s soul’, as the telnyashka (striped shirt) is affectionately and playfully called.
We are confident that, having read this piece by a journalist with a background in the Pacific and a wealth of experience on military cruisers — who is also a mentor to many war correspondents — each of you will take away something valuable and important.
